SWAYTHLING LAWN TENNIS CLUB

Posted on April 30, 2001

Possibly one of the best kept secrets in Swaythling is the existence of two grass tennis courts, hidden between Bassett Green Road and Ethelburt Avenue. With an entrance tucked right into the corner of the lower green between numbers 15 and 17, Swaythling Lawn Tennis Club has been the focus of fun and friendship for many residents for at least 30 years.

When I first joined in 1978, the club was struggling to survive, with too few members to finance the upkeep of the courts and clubhouse properly. An influx of young couples and their children in the early 80’s changed the club considerably; council grants paid for new surrounding netting and coaching sessions were introduced for junior members. We began to employ professional help with the courts and to hold fundraising events to pay for major annual maintenance. A new clubhouse was built and membership numbers rose, though the friendly and informal atmosphere remained.

The club continues to evolve and prosper. We now play friendly matches against other small clubs (whose members always admire our courts and facilities) and continue our games in the winter on the indoor courts at Fleming Park. Quiz nights, cake sales, rambles, tournaments and ladder matches make membership a social as well as an athletic experience.
And the bottom line? Adult membership for the coming season is £40 to include all tennis balls on club nights (Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays). Juniors pay less than half of this, depending on age.
Not played tennis for years? Never played on grass? Scared you won’t be good enough?! Or think you might be too good?!! Our standard covers quite a range, from those who want a fairly gentle, friendly game to the more competitive players and we have no ‘playing in’ rule. We find that people improve with practice and everyone is welcome. If there is sufficient demand, coaching can be arranged.

And finally — we are holding an Open Day on Saturday, 12th May to coincide with our annual Sale of Plants, Cakes, Books and Puzzles. Do come along to the club and meet us, perhaps have a game or two and discover just how well-kept our hidden courts are!
