The Big Jubilee Lunch will be on Sunday 3rd June as part of the official national Jubilee Celebrations. We intend that Big Lunches are held throughout the area covered by this association, so that everyone has a nearby Big Lunch to go to: Bassett Green Road, Field Close, Leaside Way, Summerfield Gardens, Stoneham Lane and Ethelburt Avenue - bottom, middle and top. We hope everyone will participate.

Please email us or contact your street rep, if you would like to help organize a Big Lunch. Organization and expense will be kept to a minimum by running them on a “bring your own and share basis”. For help with holding a Big Lunch see www.thebiglunch.com/

The developers are still required to provide no parking signage for Ethelburt Avenue. In the last Newsletter, we consulted on the design of signs. Three emails and a verbal representation were received, suggesting different signs. In view of the limited number of responses, as well as lack of agreement amongst them, the Committee at its last meeting reaffirmed its original design.

by Rosie Mellett, aged 11.

Rosie recently played the lead role in the Footlights Youth Theatre production of “Annie”at the Nuffield Theatre.

After the auditions, there was what seemed like an eternity to find out who was playing which part. At 7pm on the dot, we fired up the computer to find the cast list. Yes, Yes, Yes, I got the part of Annie. Exhilarated! I never thought in all my life, I would take on a lead role at such a young age.

Now the hard work was to begin …………… ……. Rehearsals were tough but fun. So many lines to learn, so many songs to remember. I was slightly nervous when I found out we would be using a real dog in the show, but my nerves were unfounded. Sandy was soft, gentle and absolutely wonderful, and did his best to behave on stage.

On the opening night, the whole cast were filled with excitement. Orphans positioned on stage. I entered and sang my first song ‘Maybe’. I was to find out later that my entire family and relatives didn’t have a dry eye between them.

Despite the fact I remember so clearly every moment of the thrilling experience, one particular thing will always stay with me. Sitting off stage behind the wings, I prepared myself for the final curtain call; braced for the moment, smiled boldly and gave everyone the cheesy grin they were waiting for. However, I soon caught dad’s eye, I’m sure there was a tear. The realisation that it was all over and had been such a success was very emotional.

Would I do it all again? Yes, Yes, Yes!
