A few weeks ago, a note was delivered throughout the Residents Association area to encourage people to offer support to their neighbours, and to give residents a number to call for help and support, if they needed any.

We are taking this opportunity to remind everyone that this group is up and running, and to let you know that it has already been providing help to some of our neighbours. Big thanks to all those who have helped already.

If you would like to help, please put a message in the HCERA Face Book group, with your name and address, or ring Chloe*. The group is run via Facebook Messenger, with an additional spreadsheet, so please be aware that we are keeping your details, for this purpose only and they will be deleted when the need is over.

To join the HCERA Facebook group: Login /Sign up for Facebook. Search for “Herbert Collins Estates Residents Association” and click on “join”, answer the questions and submit. It is a closed group for residents only.

At the most recent road maintenance working party, John Dixon asked me to take on the role of co-ordinator for these events in future, to allow him to stand down.

Let us all thank John Dixon for his efforts during 16 years in co-ordinating these groups. The condition of Ethelburt Avenue has markedly improved under John’s quiet and careful guidance. I hope all in the road will join in thanking John for all his efforts in organisation and enthusing folks to get involved. John intends to remain involved in the working parties.

Road maintenance working parties are now suspended. I will contact volunteers when we are able to restart them. To volunteer or find out more, email me,

In the present difficult times, we are obviously concerned for our own. But if you can spare something to help people needing to use food banks, please do. I will put a box outside 52 Ethelburt Avenue. It will be sent to the central depot in Millbrook for distribution. We need tinned foodstuff, pasta, rice, (including gluten free and vegan), pet food, tampons, toilet goods, sweets. Anything we might be able to afford for ourselves, is something somebody without money also needs.

We have optimistically chosen Saturday 4th July for the Summer Party. If it can take place, we will send out invitations about two weeks in advance or if not, perhaps later in the summer.

Sadly, we will not be holding our Open Gardens Day this year. Make your garden even more beautiful for next year!

We hope to have something to report in the next Newsletter about planting wild flowers in a verge.

Swaythling Lawn Tennis Club is a small LTA affiliated tennis club with two grass courts located by the lower green in Ethelburt Avenue. In normal times, we welcome all standards of players, including beginners and juniors who are able to make use of the courts, take part in mix ins with other members and play in friendly matches with other local clubs. Due to the coronavirus restrictions, all tennis courts are closed until further notice. The LTA has also suspended all coaching activities.

If we are able to open at any time during our season, which usually runs from the end of April to the end of September, we will make an announcement on our website www.swaythlingtennis.org.uk In the meantime, please contact our Chair, John Green, phone: 023 8067 1016 or email: green.john@btinternet.com for information about membership.
