The Ethelburt Avenue neighbourhood watch committee recognises that the Avenue is a generally safe area with a strong sense of community and regular contacts between neighbours, but it is concerned that there may be people living alone who still feel somewhat vulnerable in respect of minor crime and anti-social behaviour. Anyone who would welcome being put in touch with another nearby resident who would agree to act as an easy point of contact in the event of concerns, is invited to get in touch with me as neighbourhood watch co-ordinator. (Phone 8090 4166)

Over the past year there have been a few instances of cars being broken into locally. The standard advice applies - ensure that there are no valuable items visible within the vehicle. Even quite minor items can act as an excuse to break a window. Additionally, it has been suggested that leaving the glove compartment open can act as an indicator that there is nothing to steal. Stickers indicating ‘no valuables in this vehicle’ may also be a deterrent. We are obtaining a stock and will distribute them.

We suggest that if you witness an instance of joyriding, you aim to note the car registration number together with a description of the vehicle and occupants and report it to the police. We would also be grateful if you would pass the same information to a member of the neighbourhood watch committee, as we try to maintain our own record of any incidents.

Finally, I am looking to give up the neighbourhood watch co-ordinating role. It’s not particularly onerous, but I’ve done a two-year stint and I’m unwilling to make a career of being Mr Neighbourhood Watch. We could also do with a new committee member from the top end of the road following Kate Clayton’s departure. Anyone who thinks they might be interested on either score, please give me a call on 8090 4166.

Swaythling Lawn Tennis Club is a small and friendly LTA affiliated tennis club tucked away behind the houses in Ethelburt Avenue.

We do not run a ‘play your way in’ policy for those wishing to join; instead we welcome players of all different levels, from beginners to the more experienced. We also take junior members (under 18). We have recently relaxed our ‘whites only’ dress code requesting instead that clothing is ‘appropriate to the game’ and most importantly with correct footwear. We are always looking for new members wanting to experience playing tennis on grass courts and who are willing to help us maintain this rather special amenity on our doorstep.

Please contact Sue Green on 8067 1016 for joining details.

Annual Plant and Cake Sale/Open Day
SLTC will be holding its annual sale of plants and homemade cakes on Saturday 20 May at the Club, starting at 1.30 p.m. This will also be the Club’s open day - do come along and have a game for free - all welcome, young and not so young.

Come and see if tennis is your sport!

The Team Lower volunteers have been called up to make the regular repairs on the 22nd April. If you would like to join in future work please contact John Dixon via the HCERA email address, or by dropping your details into 34 Ethelburt Avenue. New faces will always be welcome, and no special skills or tools are required.

Some sections of grass verge have been put in place by the residents outside their own properties, and some work has been organised by the Road Improvement Group (RIG) and the work done by the repair volunteers. To avoid any future efforts looking haphazard, Rob Williams, Godfrey Collyer, John Dixon, John Scoates and Maurice Drake have measured the road width, checked the positions of the drains and lampposts, and determined the best dimensions for the verges and the paths that they create. The road is 40′ wide in total throughout its length, and we will try to restore verges of 4′ width with 4′ of path at each side of the road. This will leave a width of 24′ for vehicles (either parked or travelling). Rob will draw plans showing the restored verges for all to comment on before any work is done by the RIG.

We want any future work to be guided by your views, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your thoughts and opinions.

On 16th March, Angela Gilbert and Gay Dawkins, our street reps for Leaside Way and Summerfield Gardens attended a meeting of the “Safe Living Working Group”. This is one of several working groups through which the North Neighbourhoods Partnership does its business.

The most interesting part of the meeting was a presentation by Simon Theobald from “Crime Stoppers”. They are independent of the police; information can be given anonymously and calls are not recorded. Crime Stoppers then speedily forward the information to the police. Their number is 0800 555 111.

Security at St George’s School is to be improved by new fences and gates. The litter pick-up team will look at the area around the school and the adjoining woods.

The Dispersal Zone around Ventnor Court will continue but will not be enlarged.

Standing under umbrellas in the pouring rain, Angela Gilbert and Gaye Dawkins posed for the picture that appeared in the March 9th issue of the Daily Echo under the headline “Why are we the forgotten people of the City?”. The article went on to say that residents on the Leaside Way Estate in Bassett say they are plagued by mobs of marauding youngsters who make their lives a misery. Locals say that there is nothing for teenagers and younger children on the estate. Jeff Wain, chairman of the residents’ association told the Daily Echo, “I feel this area has been forgotten. Other areas such as Thornhill and Millbrook have received a lot of funding but we have not - as far as the Council is concerned we may as well be living in Beirut”.
